From a vision for maternal health to a national institution
The story of the National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Abakaliki (NOFIC), is rooted in a commitment to improving maternal health and restoring the dignity of women affected by obstetric fistula and related reproductive health conditions.
The initiative began in 2008 as the vision of Her Excellency, Chief Mrs Josephine Nwuzor Elechi, wife of the second Executive Governor of Ebonyi State. Through her Mother and Child Care Initiative (MCCI), a fistula centre was established in Ebonyi State with the support of development partners and stakeholders.
Mother & Child Care Initiative
The MCCI Fistula Centre provided the foundation for what would subsequently develop into a national institution dedicated to the advancement of obstetric fistula care and maternal health.
A maternal-health vision takes shape
The Mother and Child Care Initiative (MCCI) Fistula Centre was established in Ebonyi State as a pioneering effort to advance maternal health and provide care for women affected by obstetric fistula.
National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Abakaliki
In 2011, the Federal Government of Nigeria established the National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Abakaliki, as the country's first national health facility specifically established for the treatment, rehabilitation, research, reintegration and training related primarily to obstetric fistula and associated reproductive health issues.
Excellence in healthcare, training and research
NOFIC's mandate extends beyond clinical treatment. The Centre's responsibilities encompass treatment, training, prevention, rehabilitation and research, supporting a broader approach to improving reproductive health and strengthening specialist healthcare capacity.
Restoring dignity. Building expertise. Transforming lives.
Today, the Centre's mandate provides an important foundation for specialised professional education alongside its healthcare responsibilities. Its training services include the School of Post-Basic Oncology Nursing, reflecting NOFIC's wider commitment to developing skilled healthcare professionals.
